This is the third time I have seen her this morning. Each time the bus stops and our crowd gets out to see another of the famous sites of Mumbai, she and several others are there, offering strings of elephants, beaded purses, exotic fans made of peacock feathers, postcards, bracelets, trinkets, giant balloons. She is trying to make a living. She is quiet, slightly pushy yet polite, persistent, and she knows where the busses will stop next. I ask about her workday, how many strings of elephants she sells. She is interested in chit chat if it will help her sell. She is a business woman. I buy two sets of elephants on a string.
